Dad-tastic Crafts for Father’s Day: Make Memories, Not Messes!

Father’s Day is around the corner, and what better way to celebrate the amazing dad in your life than with a heartfelt, handmade gift? Store-bought gifts are nice, but there’s something truly special about a present made with love (and maybe a little glitter!). From my own personal experience, my father doesn’t prefer neither likes the fact when I’m spending too much money on him, typically considers it as an extravagance.

So, this year I decided to ditch the stress of complicated crafts and embrace the joy of simple, creative activities. I’ve got a bunch of fun ideas that are perfect for all ages and abilities, from toddlers to teenagers. So grab your craft supplies, put on some tunes, and get ready to make some dad-approved masterpieces!

1. The “World’s Best Dad” Comic Strip

This one is a winner for all ages. Dig out some construction paper, markers, and maybe some old comic books for inspiration. Help younger kids draw simple panels featuring their favorite activities with dad, or let older kids unleash their inner artist with a more elaborate comic strip. Don’t forget to add a heartfelt message on the last panel declaring Dad the official “World’s Best” (in whatever category he rocks most – grilling champion, tickle monster extraordinaire, or master joke teller). Decide on 3-4 funny or heartwarming moments that showcase why your dad is the “World’s Best.” Sketch out the panels on separate pieces of construction paper or fold a large piece into sections. You can use a ruler to make sure your panels are similar in size.In each panel, draw the scene and characters. It can be simple or detailed, depending on your artistic skills. You can include things like your dad helping you fix your bike, reading you a bedtime story, making you laugh, or offering words of encouragement.Write dialogue in speech bubbles for what the characters are saying. You can also add captions below each panel to describe the scene or add humor.Decorate your comic with stickers, glitter, or drawings of things your dad loves.Lastly, present your finished comic strip to your dad! You can frame it, add a heartfelt message on the back or simply watch his face light up as he reads your creation.Think about your dad’s hobbies and interests when creating your comic.

If you’re not confident in your drawing skills, focus on funny dialogue and captions.

Get creative! There’s no right or wrong way to make a comic.

You can make this a collaborative project and have other siblings or family members contribute a panel. This is a thoughtful and unique gift that your dad is sure to treasure. It’s a great way to show him how much you appreciate him!

2. “Doodly Dad” Portrait

Let your creativity flow with this personalized portrait. Find a picture of Dad (bonus points for a funny one!), and print it out on cardstock. Now comes the fun part! Decorate the picture with doodles, stickers, and whatever else your imagination conjures. Write messages like “World’s Strongest Arms” next to a picture of Dad holding you, or “Best Laugh Ever” by his smiling face. This is a guaranteed giggle-fest and a unique keepsake Dad will treasure. Let Dad be the inspiration! Think about his hobbies, favorite things, or things that represent him (e.g., tools for a handy dad, musical notes for a music-loving dad). Lightly sketch these elements all over the canvas as the background. Now it’s time for Dad! Draw a simple outline of his head and facial features. You can keep it basic with circles for eyes and a big smile, or add more details if you’re comfortable. This is where the fun begins! Fill in Dad’s features and hair with all sorts of doodles. Hearts for eyes, squiggly lines for hair, or even little pictures of his favorite things can go inside his head.Cut out small fabric scraps (like ties, hats, glasses) or use buttons for a 3D effect. Glue them onto the portrait to personalize it even further.Write a heartfelt message for Dad on the canvas. You can use markers or cut out letters from colored construction paper and glue them on.Encourage young children to focus on the fun of doodling rather than perfect shapes.

Use a pencil for light outlining first, then go over it with markers or paint.

Let the doodles be all different shapes and sizes – that’s what makes it unique!

Make it a collaborative project! Let Dad add some doodles himself! This “Doodly Dad” portrait is a great way for kids to show their love and appreciation for their dad in a creative and personalized way.

3. “Tool Time” Terrarium

For the dad who loves tinkering, this terrarium is a perfect fit. Find a small glass jar, some pebbles, potting soil, and a cute little succulent (cacti are low maintenance too!). Layer the pebbles and soil in the jar, then carefully plant the succulent. Dad can personalize his mini garden with decorative rocks, miniature tools (think tiny wrenches or screwdrivers!), or even a small toy car. If using Dad’s real toolbox, make sure it’s clean and dry. Line the bottom with a coffee filter or mesh screening to create drainage.Add a layer of gravel or small pebbles to the bottom, about 1 inch deep. This helps excess water drain and prevents root rot.Add a layer of terrarium potting mix on top of the gravel, filling about halfway. Here comes the fun part! Carefully plant your terrarium plants according to their needs. Air plants can be nestled on top of rocks or tucked into crevices. Ferns and mosses will thrive in the damp environmentNow for the “Tool Time” touch! Add miniature tools like toy wrenches or screwdrivers around the plants. Tiny construction worker figures or a handyman can add a playful touch.Terrariums need some moisture. Use a spray bottle to gently mist the plants and soil, but avoid soaking it.Wrap the toolbox with clear cellophane or decorate it with a handmade card that says “Happy Father’s Day from your favorite handyman/woman!”This project is a great way to combine Dad’s love for tools with a touch of nature. It’s a unique and thoughtful gift that’s sure to bring a smile to his face!

4. “Grill Master” Apron

Is Dad the king of the barbecue? Show your appreciation with a customized apron! Grab a plain fabric apron (you can find these at most dollar stores) and some fabric markers. Let your artistic side shine as you decorate the apron with flames, grilling tools, or even Dad’s signature barbecue sauce recipe. Sketch out your ideas for the apron. You can go with a simple “Grill Master” text with a flame graphic, or get more elaborate with additional elements like grilling tools or funny slogans.Wash and dry the apron to remove any sizing or chemicals. Iron it flat for a smooth surface. If you’re comfortable freehanding, use fabric paint or markers to directly draw your design on the apron. For a more defined look, use stencils and fabric paint to create crisp lettering or grill-themed images. Secure the stencil with stencil adhesive or masking tape and dab the paint with a sponge brush.Draw your design on freezer paper, cut it out, and iron it onto the apron. Paint within the stencil, then peel off the freezer paper for clean edges.Add a special touch by including Dad’s name, a year, or a funny message like “King of the Grill.”Allow the paint to dry completely according to the manufacturer’s instructions. You may need to heat-set the paint with an iron for added durability (check the paint instructions). If desired, sew on pockets from fabric scraps or ribbon to hold grilling tools or condiments. This “Grill Master” apron will be a unique and heartfelt gift for Dad that he can wear with pride while grilling up his favorite dishes!

5. “Dad Jokes” Jar

For the pun-loving dad, this craft is a laugh riot. Find a decorative jar and fill it with slips of paper. On each piece of paper, write down one of Dad’s infamous (or should we say ingenious?) dad jokes. Whenever Dad needs a pick-me-up, he can reach into the jar for a guaranteed groan-worthy giggle. Use construction paper to cut out shapes like stars, hearts, or ties and glue them onto the jar.

Paint the jar a solid color or create a fun design.

Wrap the lid or the entire jar with colorful washi tape.Cut the construction paper into small strips or squares.

On each piece, write down a dad joke. Try to keep the punchline hidden! You can do this by:

Folding the bottom third of the paper upwards. Write the joke setup on the top part and the punchline underneath the fold.

Writing the joke on one side and the punchline on the other.Once you have a good collection of jokes, fold or roll up the papers and place them inside the jar.Tie a colorful ribbon around the lid for an extra festive touch.

Cut out a label that says “Dad Jokes” or “Warning: May Cause Groans” and glue it onto the jar.Get siblings or other family members involved in writing jokes.

If your dad has any favorite dad jokes, be sure to include them in the jar.

You can also add in some silly riddles or knock-knock jokes to the mix.

This is a great gift idea for any occasion, not just Father’s Day!

With a little creativity, you can create a Dad Joke Jar that your dad will love and use for years to come.

Bonus Tip:

For an extra special touch, personalize any of these crafts with a handprint or footprint. Little ones can leave their tiny mark of love, while older kids can write their name or a special message alongside their creation.

Remember, the most important ingredient in any Father’s Day craft is love. So have fun, get messy (it’s part of the charm!), and most importantly, create lasting memories with the dad you love. Happy crafting, and Happy Father’s Day!
