It often becomes boring, monotonous with those bears, soft toys hanging around from all corners , the colors blue and pink seems tedious often. But, soon I realised the importance of creativity and personalization with DIY craft ideas.
So, dust off those crayons and pipe cleaners, because we’re about to embark on a DIY adventure to turn bedrooms into brilliant works of art! The best part? These crafts are super fun, easy on the wallet, and most importantly, create lasting memories with your little ones.
Glowing Galaxy on the Ceiling:
Turn bedtime into a stargazing adventure! Grab some glow-in-the-dark paint and create a mesmerizing galaxy right on the ceiling. Use white or light blue paint for the base, then dip a toothbrush in different shades of green, blue, and purple to flick speckles of paint, mimicking twinkling stars. For an extra touch, add stencils of planets or spaceships! Bonus points for creating constellations and telling stories about them before lights out. If you’re not using glow-in-the-dark white paint, apply a base coat of light blue or dark blue paint on the ceiling. This will create a night sky effect. Let it dry completely.Dilute white glow-in-the-dark paint with some water to create a milky way streak effect. Cut out colorful fish shapes from construction paper or felt, and add them to the scene with double-sided tape. Don’t forget the details! Bubbles made with white paint pens and playful seahorses made with handprints are sure to add whimsy. Plan your design. This is where you and your child can get creative! Will there be a coral reef teeming with fish? A majestic sea turtle gliding through the kelp forests? A playful pod of dolphins dancing in the waves? Sketch out your design on a piece of paper to get a general idea of what you want to create.Prepare the wall. Cover the floor and furniture around the work area with drop cloths. Use painter’s tape to mask off any trim or molding that you don’t want to paint.Paint the background. Start by painting the background of your mural. Next, grab a large sheet, some clothespins, and secure it to a doorway or clothesline. Voila! An instant puppet theater is born. Put on a show, create silly stories, and let your child’s imagination soar. Let your child pick out their favorite socks! Crazy colors or patterns make fun puppets.
Turn the sock inside out and decide on the placement of the eyes. Mark the spots with a pen. Tip: Put your hand in the sock to see where your fingers will be for best eye placement. Glue on buttons or googly eyes.
Cut out a nose, mouth, hair, or other features from felt and glue them on. Yarn scraps can also be used for hair.
Get creative! There are no rules. Grab a large cardboard box (appliance boxes are perfect!), fabric scraps or old sheets for curtains, paint or markers, construction paper, tape, scissors. Once the puppets and playhouse are ready, it’s time for the grand finale – the puppet show! Gather some blankets and pillows to create an audience area. Work with your child to come up with a story, sing songs, or act out scenes. The possibilities are endless! Get the whole family involved in decorating the playhouse!
For extra fun, add a hole in the roof of the playhouse to create a “spotlight” using a flashlight.
Nature’s Masterpieces:
Let’s bring the outdoors in! Take a nature walk and collect some fallen leaves, twigs, and colorful pebbles. Back home, use white glue to create beautiful collages on cardstock. Leaves can become wings on a majestic butterfly, twigs can form the branches of a whimsical tree, and pebbles can be transformed into ladybugs with a dab of paint. Frame these masterpieces and hang them proudly on the wall. Collect colorful flowers while on a nature walk. Press them between heavy books for a few days. Once dry, glue them onto cardboard or construction paper to create beautiful framed pictures.Paint a paper plate yellow. Cut out brown construction paper for the center and green for the stem and leaves. These lanterns add a soft glow to the room, creating a calming atmosphere for bedtime. Crafting night light lanterns with your kids is a fun way to add a personal touch to their room, and chase away nighttime fears with a gentle glow.Mason jars are perfect for night lights. Decorate them with paint, glitter, or tissue paper. Cut out shapes on construction paper and stick them on the jar for a silhouette effect. Add battery-operated fairy lights or a small LED tea light for a warm glow.Blow up a balloon and cover it with strips of tissue paper dipped in watered-down glue (paper mache technique).
